Burglaries increase when the clocks go back!
This weekend the clocks go back. Figures show that burglaries increase too.
Many in the security industry believe that burglaries increase as a direct result of the clocks going back. Firstly it is much easier to see who is not at home - those that are have more lights on than Blackpool's famous illuminations. Also it is easier for burglars to operate under cover of darkness.
Home Office Statistics support this idea - a 12.8% increase in burglaries Oct-Dec 2000 v Jul-Sep 2000, for example.
So what should we do about it?
Well, before you rush out and buy the lighting fixture in B&Q, it is worth reviewing your overall security. Lighting on it's own will not deter a burglar if other security measures are inadequate. The usual tips, such as making sure locks are fitted and secure on both doors and windows and a burglar alarm is set up and used are worth considering.
In terms of lighting there are two areas to consider: indoor lighting that gives the impression that someone is home and external lighting that may deter a burglar. When fitting indoor lighting that comes on using a timer make sure it does go on and off in keeping with normal behaviour. In the current greener climate there are plenty of low energy bulbs and outside solar powered lights to be considered.
In summary, although there is no need to panic, burglaries do tend to increase at this time of year so it is worthwhile checking your security and lighting before the nights draw in.
