Is it worth putting a padlock on it?
There are thousands of pounds worth of belongings in sheds and garages throughout the UK - protecting them with a padlock really is worth it.
When considering the security of our homes we must not forget that it is not just our house that needs protection - often we leave garden sheds, garages, summerhouses and workshops unlocked.
Often our garages are home to expensive cars, which we feel are safe with the keys locked away in our house, however there are thousands of pounds worth of other property there too.
More and more garages & sheds store lawn mowers, bicycles and even very drinkable wines!
These buildings are easy targets. They are further away from the homeowner & not usually secured - making them easy to enter without the risk of being caught.
In addition we also use them to store tools that would be useful to the burglar, such as hacksaws, hammers or even an axe. One householder we know of stored an axe in their garden shed, which a burglar used to axe down the front door to the house!
Therefore it is very important that we always secure these outbuildings.
Also garden gates can easily be padlocked to protect the perimeter of the premises.
There is a wide range of padlocks available to suit a variety of applications and they are available in two basic designs, open shackle and close shackle.
Open shackle padlocks are the ordinary design ( see the picture on the right) in which the looped shackle is exposed.
Close shackle padlocks are even more difficult to cut or saw as their shackles are protected.
For use in the garden and/or on outbuildings a weatherproof padlock, such as the Yale waterproof padlock are ideal.
